Some disc formats require certain drive models to dump to Redump standards. This page aims to provide a comprehensive guide on which drives can be used for dumping various formats of optical media.

Contents

DVD-Video / DVD-ROM

DVD-Video and DVD-ROM dumping is supported with virtually ANY drive that supports the DVD format. For your first dump/submission, please dump twice to verify matching hashes for any potentially misbehaving DVD-Rom drives.

CD-ROM / CD-Audio

Plextor Method (Easy & Recommended ODDs)

CD format is particularly difficult, hardware support wise. Certain models of Plextor brand drives can dump with DIC flawlessly. Your drive should have the final firmware installed. The final firmware is linked below on archive.org for most models.

Note regarding specific drives and capabilities

IDE models can be used on a Laptop with a USB Adapter (search "UGREEN USB to IDE Converter, USB 3.0 to IDE" OR "Kingwin IDE to USB" on Amazon (e.g. Amazon US or Germany, the latter will import into other European countries cheaply) - do NOT buy a cheap generic adapter), a Desktop tower with a cheap card, or a 5.25" IDE USB enclosure (can be found on eBay or similar, but supply might be scarce).

SATA drives can be very hard to find or expensive, it's often easier to just buy an IDE model + IDE > USB adapter.

SCSI models can only be used with a Desktop tower with a cheap card (no laptops).

The 7xx series of Plextor drives are the only drives currently supported by DIC for reading multisession discs. The 755 and 760 models typically have less issues reading discs.

The 5224 model has multisession capability, but that feature is currently not supported in DIC (this may change in the future).

Suggested eBay search terms

To search ebay quickly, you can use the following searches. Only use one at a time, as otherwise the search text will be too long and it'll give an error.

  • (PX-760AUF, PX-755UF, PX-716UF, PX-716UFL, PX-712UF, PX-708UF, PX-708UF2, Plextor Premium2U, Plextor Premium-U, PX-W5224TU, PX-W4824TU, PX-W4012TU, PX-760SA, PX-716SA, PX-712SA, PX-760A, PX-755A, PX-716A)
  • (DVM-DM16FBS, PX-716AL, PX-712A, PX-708A, PX-704A, DVM-H44FB, Plextor Premium2, Plextor Premium, PX-W5224A, PX-W5224TA, PX-W4824A, PX-W4824TA, PX-W4824U, PX-W4012A, PX-W4012TA, PX-W4012U, PX-W4012S, PX-W4012TS, PX-W1210TS, PX-W4220T, PX-40TS)

Non-Plextor ODDs (Plextors are still recommended, as more testing is needed for these)

PLEASE NOTE: Additional testing and analysis is still needed to determine if these drives can consistently dump media with verifiable/acceptable hashes, and at this time, submissions may not be accepted. Please contact a redump mod with any questions prior to purchasing or dumping with one of these drives.

Dumps from the following drives will be accepted under the following circumstances:

  • They are from discs consisting only of a single data track
  • They are from discs with both data and audio tracks and the disc has a negative offset

PLEASE NOTE for pure Audio CDs we are presently only accepting dumps made with redumper and drives from the list of Plextors above.

If you can't get one of the above Plextor models, this is your next best bet. List is still WIP at the moment, please check the Notes section before getting access to these ODDs until we've tested all five PCB Revisions from LG (HL-DT-ST).

The following text/table is WIP (Work-in-Progress)!

  • Could every ODD that supports M-Disc DVDs [1] and has a MediaTek (maybe even Renesas) chipset have at least one firmware version (even from a rebadged model) that support reading cache backwards and forward (OpCode: 0xF1)?

Additional drive brands may work, some with limitations (such as can only read discs with a negative write-offset). A few LG/Asus BD drives are also compatible with DIC dumping methods, but they do need to be flashed with the Asus BW-16D1HT 3.02 firmware. Note: not all listed models have been (known) tested with DIC yet, please share your results.

Not Recommended, Non-Plextor ODDs

NOTE: dumps made using these drives will not currently be accepted. They should be purchased only by those willing to invest their time and money in testing and on the understanding that they may eventually prove to be incompatible for use by Redump.

List of Non-Supported Drives

GD-ROM

GDs contain two distinctly different "Areas" of data ("LD Area" and "HD Area"), separated by a ring. Each Area is dumped with a separate process.

For dumping the LD Area, the same rules apply as in dumping a CD as they use the same technology. The list of compatible drives for dumping LD Area is above #CD-ROM_.2F_CD-Audio and follow the Disc Dumping Guide (MPF).

The HD Area dumping the process is different, and you need one of the drives below.

HD Area: GD-ROM (Pressed)

Recommended:

  • Samsung TSSTCorp models:
    • SH-D163A aka TS-H353A (supports C2 for both Redbook Audio and Data tracks)
    • SH-D162C aka TS-H352C (supports C2 for data tracks, not Redbook Audio tracks)

Possibly Working (WARNING: needs significant additional testing)

  • Samsung TSSTCorp models:
    • TS-H192C - Initial test indicates this drive works similarly as well as the Recommended Samsung TSSTCorp models.
  • Plextor (can take advantage of DiscImageCreator's /c2 error correction):
    • Plextor PX-708A - WARNING!: some users reported success dumping the HD area of GD-ROMs with this model, but so far not enough tests have been done. It is not known if audio tracks in the HD area dump well (reports of success were only based on dumping 3-track discs) and there were also failure reports, so only get this drive to dump GD-ROMs if you are willing to experiment a lot (and possibly fail).

Untested, but rumored to work:

  • Lite-On models: LH-18A1H, LTD-165H, SOHD-16P9S
  • Plextor models: PX-W4824TA, PX-W4824TU
  • Samsung TSSTCorp models: SH-D162D aka TS-H352D

Not Recommended or Don't Work:

  • LG model: GCR-8522B - Works, but "slower and clunkier" than Recommended drive models.
  • TEAC model: DV-516G - Works, but difficult to remove lid to swap discs, pin eject method doesn't seem to work.
  • Lite-On model: SOHD-167T - difficult to remove lid to swap discs, pin eject method doesn't seem to work. When dumping, lots of issues, I couldn't get a single section to dump properly.
  • NEC model: CDR-1901A - difficult to remove lid to swap discs, did not get matches in RevQuixo's test (needs more testing?)
  • Samsung TSSTCorp models: TS-H353B aka SH-D163B (isn't as fast or match-friendly as TS-H353A & TS-H352C)
  • Plextor models that don't work: PX-716A, PX-755SA, PX-W5224TA
  • Asus models that don't work: BW-16D1HT

HD Area: GD-R (Burned Preproduction)

Appears promising, more testing required:

  • Plextor: PX-708A, PX-755A, PX-755SA, PX-4012TA[2]

CAUTION: although some initial success has been had with these drives, the process remains experimental and requires further testing before dumps made using this method are confirmed as consistently good.

Don't Work:

  • Plextor:
    • PX-760A - Reads, but can possibly fail past a certain point near the end. Might just need a laser alignment (forcing the drive to read at a certain sector, with something like CDRwin).
